Auburn University College of Nursing graduate student Abby Bell was recognized recently at the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Celebration Service in Birmingham, Ala., marking the culmination of a year dedicated to service, leadership, and advancing health equity.
Bell, a member of the 2025–2026 class of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama, has focused her fellowship project on improving maternal and infant health outcomes through culturally responsive breastfeeding education and support. Her work specifically addresses disparities among Hispanic women in Chambers County, Alabama, aiming to reduce health risks and promote long-term wellness for both mothers and children. Her faculty mentor was Dr. Linda Gibson-Young, and her site mentor was Dr. Amy Pridemore.
As a graduate student in Auburn’s Family Nurse Practitioner program and a clinical coordinator within the College of Nursing, Bell has combined academic training with community engagement to develop meaningful, evidence-based interventions. Her project reflects a strong commitment to addressing social determinants of health and empowering underserved populations through education and support.
The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is a nationally recognized program that prepares emerging health professionals to lead with compassion and service. Fellows complete year-long community-based projects that create sustainable change while developing leadership skills grounded in equity and collaboration.
Bell’s recognition at the Birmingham celebration highlights not only her individual achievements, but also the broader impact of Auburn Nursing’s commitment to community-engaged practice and improving health outcomes across Alabama.
